After breaking his leg, undergraduate student Luke Durward used his time to return home and mentor his little brother on healthy eating. While illustrating his brother's dramatic transformation, Durward shares the obvious secret that is repeatedly overlooked by unsuccessful dieters. TEDxYorkU held its 4th annual event on March 4, 2014 at York University. The theme for the event was Combustion. TheJJDominoIII: so boring
Brandon Kirkland: So all I need is a personal chef, a personal trainer and a lot of free time.
locao51: the most difficult part is having money to buy food ( healthy food )
Nick Mozzicato: if it's not there you can't eat it? that's when I order Domino's from my cell phone. app is super fast.
I get food cravings constantly. I've tried dieting both for my self and for my doctor. gone back and forth. I have too much depression and lesrned helplessness that gets in the way. spent my entire life in therapy. I've given up on changing my diet. I just eat junk all the time. I have gastrointestinal candidias and a lot of other health issues but I can't stick to a diet so I don't bother.
jwd0808: So Luke convincet his parents to stop buying junk food for his 11 year old brother? Part of the story seems to be missing here...
Joshua Boudreau: I don't think that this necessarily explores the amount of willpower required to actually follow this lifestyle... especially if you're in a relationship.
Really, it's not "unbelievably" easy to eat healthy - it's actually quite difficult. Many of us have been conditioned to crave hamburgers, pizza, pasta, etc... so if that's all you really know, you can stock your house up with vegetables, but are you really going to know what to make? And if you do, are you going to want to make it in lieu of what you're comfortable with?
I think that there's a lot more to explore than the surface talking point of this presentation.
Tashtan Tashtanov: god bless every boy and girl with a caring like Luke.
vanda Mikoloski: What a great an sweet effort!
Erin Skelly: I watched this hoping that I was going to get something that was helpful, but this wasn't really helpful at all... a rather simplistic idea from someone who doesn't understand the psychology behind overeating or not eating healthy, and who doesn't understand the pressures of everyday adult life. Good on him for getting through the talk--he was clearly nervous--but I found this video to be a waste of time.
The message basically is, as another commenter said, "don't keep bad foods in your house so they are not a temptation." Duh. That part isn't rocket science. But what about the temptation of when you are out with friends and everyone else is having drinks and noshing on nachos, or when you're so stressed and exhausted from a long day at work and you don't have the energy to even think about preparing a healthy meal? Ordering delivery takes far less effort. In this day and age, people are overworked and have very little free time.
Sebastian: ZERO information. Not to mention his rhetoric.
Celeste Hackett: I liked this. Thank you.
Super Cool Shoot: I always said i wanted to live to see atleast 120, strong, healthy, happy, and sharp as a tack.
Justine F.: I think a lot of people understand and try to practice this in their home environments, but where it fails is when we go shopping. We have the willpower to keep our cupboards clean, but not our carts.
So ... shop at the natural foods store, or stay away from the processed foods in the regular grocery store. Don't even walk down the aisles that hold the temptations. Instead of going to the gas station to ostensibly grab a piece of fruit (but really a bag of chips) over your 15 minute break, bring healthy snacks to work and utilize your break room.
Definitely something I'm going to try to apply ☺
Another great way to change our environments is to change what we fill our heads with - not just our bodies. Surround ourselves with body positivity. Shut off the TV, not just to go for a walk but to get rid of the constant stream of one acceptable body type. Choose to change our negative attitudes toward being fat. Be less conscious of weight/size and more conscious of our overall health. Etc. 😄
Ray Woods: Me obvious are you kidding me this is common sense people
Jax1025: This is just uncomfortable to watch. He needs ALOT of practice in speaking, he's very awkward and mono-tone doesn't work for a motivational speech.
quitina dewey: that is so inspiring! because his little brother was a child child, I have kids and my 3 year old rarely eats healthy. I need to keep watching stuff like this and get ideas on eating healthy, I'm so afraid of gaining more weight, but I'm determined to be healthy 😉 this helped 👍 Thanx
Shari Sirotnak: He's so cute, so nervous, honestly if anyone smack talks this I'd like to see you memorize an entire speech and reiterate that to an audience and camera.
Adele Davis: I'd take option A and B, it's free food lol
Tina Hernandez: Amen great advice! When I don't regularly have sweets in the house, I don't eat them. Then it's nice to appreciate occasional treats out and about with the hubby.
