Do you get nervous and a little self conscious when you walk into a room of people you don't know? Butterflies and anxiety are normal when getting up and giving a speech in front of people. Social anxiety is beyond that-- it's an absolute fear. It's so strong that it prevents you from going places and doing things. It's limiting happiness and the ability to socialize. Social Anxiety Triggers Aaron Marino of alpha m. says social anxiety an irrational fear of embarrassing yourself or getting intensely scrutinized. Alpha covers triggers: meeting new people, being the center of attention, making small talk, public speaking, being called out in class, eating in public, going out on a date, using a public bathroom. Jeff Hoops: I've just started watching your vids about a week ago. I am actually medicated for social anxiety. I consider myself popular, played sports, etc, but damn I do not do good in group settings. I feel like my IQ drops by 50 points. Then I will usually hear back that everyone was talking about how intelligent and engaged I was. In my mind though I felt like I was wearing a black hoodie and sitting in the corner watching all of the adults talk about advanced physics. Meds have helped, but only so much. You nailed it in this vid man!

Happens all the time....I say something funny and people laugh, a handsome man talks to me, several people look at me when I am talking. Its weird cause I am not embarrassed but people comment on it and my face gets redder. Stops me from talking to people. Does anyone else have this problem?

umtodd13: There are many excellent resources available, and a great one is TOASTMASTERS.

Many people use it to eliminate social anxiety, socialize, and be great at public speaking.  It's also fun and rewarding.  Not a magic bullet, but it's very good.  I did it for a year, and then I got a job as a teacher, teaching 4-hour classes 4 days per week - now I have no social anxiety and am confident and competent in social situations and public speaking.  Highly recommended.
