Tip Tuesday: breathing for weight training

How should you breath when you're lifting weights? This is a great question! The most important answer - BREATHE throughout the movement and don't hold your breath. In fact, breath-holding can be quite risky, due to something called the Valsalva Effect. When you hold your breath, while it may feel helpful to power you are able to exert - it has a dramatic effect on your blood pressure which can be risky. If your blood pressure is already elevated, this is espeically risky. So keep breathing! To avoid this altogether and still maintain great power & strength, focus on exhaling on exertion. A good forceful exhale and proper inhalation on the reverse movement will actually help your power & strength and help you avoid the increased pressure in the chest and abdomen that happens with breath-holding!
