Transcript: Women are living longer, but their quality of life might be declining compared to men. That's according to a new study in the American Journal of Public Health. Researchers analyzed surveys about aging, disability and years spent living an active life. They found while women still outlive men, between 1982 and 2011 men started living more years without disability than women. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of women with disabilities is increasing; more than 50 percent of women over 65 have one. Vicki Freedman, lead author of the study, told CNN treatment for diseases that disproportionately affect men, like heart disease, could be improving more quickly than, say, arthritis – a common cause of disability for women. Another idea is that economic disadvantages have made it harder for women to maintain their health. The study suggested public health measures specifically for women might be needed to postpone disability and offset the cost of long-term care. Bluesy Rocker: To be gentlemen or not to be?
Nip Drip: As long as we are playing identity politics games, why don't we start initiatives that help the majority male homeless community? Or can we start initiatives that help men because they die earlier, men because they get less funding for diseases that affect them compared to women (even if the diseases kill at similar rates)? Or maybe we should help men because they are more likely to get mugged, assaulted, killed than women? Maybe we should also try and help more men get into college and abolish women only scholarships? We should help men graduate high school and we should try and give men more disposable income (women have two-thirds of the disposable income)? It likely will be a good idea, as long as we are playing these games, to get more men to vote (66% or so voters are women) and to get men the same lenient sentences as women? Or should we also try and start programs to help men in court custody cases and help get male abortion (abdicating the right to a child before it can be actually aborted) institutionalized? Maybe we should also help men because they commit suicide more often and are more likely to die on the job? Why is it that men work largely exclusively dirty dangerous jobs (99% of sewage workers are men)? There are tons of issues both genders face and the trend of women only getting help for their problems needs to stop if we are going to continue to separate everyone on the basis of gender. I personally think we should help everyone regardless of gender.
Nip Drip: Woman already get more funding and attention for diseases than men even if they kill at similar rates.
