arthropoda: These are temporary solutions. Just step on front of your foot when running. You will never have shin splint again. I had the same problem, just changed my runnign style. No more problems with my legs anymore.

GOAT Ref Davis: I hate shin splints with a passion it's the only thing stopping me from running every day but currently limited to 3 or 4 days max. Once you get past that first mile the pain goes away but there's only so many days you can put up with it until you have to take time out. Might buy me some of those compression sleeves already using the foam roller.

Guillermo Jimenez Espinosa: I used to have this shin splints thing and I didn't even know the name of that pain until yesterday. I literally wanna cry every time I used to run, because of that I completely stop running for something like 6 months. I started running again since september past year with compression sleeves + strengthening calves excercises and I can say that pain went away almost completely, now I'm training for a half marathon and my shins didn't hurt anymore (only when I press with my fingers). So try that!!

Gary Middleton: Use a golf ball to massage the muscle/soft tissue that runs along the lateral side (outside) of the shin-bone. Also need to stretch it by kneeling in what the Japanese call seiza (google it) - a cushion under your ankles might help - and then pull up one knee with your hands around your knee, while ankle is still under you butt. You will feel it stretching - and hurting.
