Tip Tuesday: still blaming your GENES?!

Did you know that you can actually only blame your parents (aka your genes) for about 60-65% of your health? Yup. So who's responsible for the other 35-40%? You guessed it - YOU! Here's the thing, to a certain degree your genetic make-up does decide your health. You're born with a certain genetic code - and that code determines many things from the color of your hair & eyes to your ratio of slow twitch to fast twitch muscle fibres in your muscles. But here's the thing, that's NOT where the story ends. Enter epi-genetics - how your genes "express" themselves. Here's the gist: your genetic code looks like xyz, however; whether or not that gene is "expressed" or turned ON is largely determined based on the STIMULUS you provide (positive or negative). So you MAY be born with a gene that makes you MORE prone to obesity. Or MORE likely to develop heart disease. Or even MORE prone to developing certain cancers... BUT - and this is BIG. YOU control whether or not these genes are expressed or "turned on" based on your BEHAVIOUR (aka your lifestyle). WHOA. Game changer right?! And this is not just important for adults - it's important for infants and children. In fact it's important to them pre-conception! WHAT?! Yup. According to research the health of the parents pre-conception can actually impact the LONG TERM health of the child they conceive. WHOA. This is fascinating stuff. So don't "give up" just because you think you're "doomed" to a life of obesity or heart disease because your parents did. Choose to make healthy lifestyle choices that support good health and your genes will express differently. Sleep well. Eat great food. Move more. Manage stress. Take care of yourself and your body will thank you.
